MythTV going mainstream on Ubuntu with Totem Plugin
As if newest GNOME release is not enough to get excited about with cool new features like better PDF support, a gnome VNC client and a centralized settings manager - now MythTV fans have something to talk about too. In GNOME 2.22 (due March 12th) Totem movie player will be getting an upgrade which will allow it to interface with MythTV directly to stream your shows.
By entering some configuration items, (backend IP address and database password) any desktop running GNOME 2.22 can browse available MythTV recordings and stream them in their native format.
GNOME 2.22 and Totem with MythTV support will be included in the upcoming Ubuntu 8.04 release - Hardy Heron - which is expected in early April. As many of you know, the Ubuntu releases tail the GNOME release cycle by a few weeks. This ensures users are on the cutting edge of Open Source Software development with a new version of Ubuntu upon each release of the GNOME desktop.

Wow!
I can’t think of it getting much easier to setup a mythtv “frontend” than this!
Ryan you are absolutely right here. With the new totem player, we should be able to connect to a MythTV backend without ever having to install a full featured frontend on our machines.
What enables the player to do this is the new gmyth library. This helper library takes care of the communications between 3rd party applications and a mythbackend. Hopefully this means we’ll see other applications adapt this library and more great features down the road!
Brilliant!
